Encounters Unforeseen: 1492 Retold

A historical novel, Encounters Unforeseen: 1492 Retold ventures beyond Eurocentric accounts to retell the history leading to Columbus’s first voyage and the initial encounters between Native American and European peoples from a bicultural perspective. Based on primary sources, it sets the childhood educations, loves and marriages, rises to power and prominence, and other life experiences of the Taíno Indian chieftains who knew Columbus—Guacanagarí, Guarionex, and Caonabó—side by side with those of Columbus and Queen Isabel and then portrays how these experiences and outlooks shaped their fateful first meetings.
