A stranger arrives in Ellishome, Colorado astride a black horse. His face is that of death, but he is no bogeyman. He is a purveyor of darkness, and he has come to Ellishome to claim the lives of men, women, and children for a bigger, blacker enterprise. Ben, a magical, talking tiger, appears to Seth Auburn in the meadow behind his backyard. Ben and the stranger are linked, waging wars for centuries across the galaxies. The tiger needs Seth's help, but it is no small task the animal is asking. With a gang of newfound friends, and with Ben guiding them, Seth must venture into the mountains to find a mysterious palace he and his friends have only dreamed about but have never actually seen.
